For high volume planting of cell / plug grown tree and hedge saplings. The short shaft enables you to bend and work closer to the ground, Dibber in one hand and cell in the other, ready to plant.

Using the same triangular cross-sectional shape as the traditional PLANTEM® Dibber to create a planting slot or notch in one strike with the option to spin and strike again for largest cells. On wetter or compact soils, the flat front face enables you to make a back slot 8’ away to lift and loosen the soil before firming in.

Research conducted by BC Forest Safety council and others highlights the benefits of improving technique & body posture to minimise injury when speed planting saplings repetitively, without guarding. Maintaining neutral postures of the shoulder and wrist are one aspect and the Short Dibber & Spear can be adapted to suit these recommendations.

PLANTEM® Short Dibber features:

  • Short lightweight GRP shaft which can be cut-to-size to suit your posture.
  • Triangular cross section to create a planting pocket for cell grown saplings
  • Heavy duty plastic DY handle (adjustable for neutral wrist posture)
  • Biosecurity Compatible - Fully cleanable by mild (non alcohol based) arboriculture disinfectant sprays (eg Cleankill, Citrox).
  • Overall length 77cm. Dibber body: length 21cm, width 9cm, thickness 3cm
  • Weight 1.6kg
  • UK Design Registration Number: 6375490
  • Manufactured in Staffordshire, UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a Tree Planting Spade and Tree Planting Dibber (or Dibble)? Should I care either way?

Spades are designed to dig holes, great for young trees with large root balls . . They usually have wide blades to move and carry soil efficiently.

Our Tree Planting Dibber is designed to make a triangular planting pocket in one strike, 9cm wide and 3cm deep.

So you use the Tree Planting Dibber with a different technique to a spade?

Yes, the dibber (or dibble) is pushed vertically into the soil to the desired depth. The cell/plug can then be dropped in to place and gently firmed in. If the soil isn't loose and crumbly just place a backslot 6” away from the planting pocket and lever gently to close the pocket bottom up to eliminate air pockets.

Can I use the PLANTEM® Dibber for plant bulbs?

Yes. With the right technique and loose soil for back filling you don’t even need to bend down!

Which one is right for me, the PLANTEM® Spear or Dibber?

Both have their advantages. The Tree Planting Dibber is brilliant on prepared planting spots, with looser soil to ease ‘firming in’. Its ideal for cell or plug grown saplings as it creates the right size hole in one or two strikes.

The tree planting Spear excels when there is more ground cover or brash, heavier, stony or rooted soils. It may be better if you have larger sapling too as it can be used to dig a hole rather than lever open a slot.

How much does the Dibble weigh?

2.6kg which we believe is a good balance between durability and portability, balancing well in the hand when hiking to the planting spot.

 Are you VAT registered?

Yes, advertised prices include 20% VAT. VAT invoices are sent with all orders.
